As we walk around our Nashville, TN office, we can’t help but notice the many happy, restored smiles that greet us. Our teeth restoration patients love their dental implants because they have provided them with beautiful replacement teeth that function and feel just like natural teeth. We aren’t the only ones who have noticed the great results possible with implants, however. In fact, more and more of our current and prospective patients suffering from missing teeth have taken notice and have begun to ask more questions about the dental implant process. To answer these questions, Drs. Elam, Vaughan, and Fleming are blogging to give their patients a general overview of each of the steps that make up the dental implant process.
The Main Steps of the Dental Implant Process
The dental implant process is a straightforward method for restoring missing teeth. In fact, it can be broken down into three easy steps, which include:
The Implant Procedure
The first step of the dental implant process is the implant procedure. During the procedure, an implant fixture, which is one of the three pieces that make up a dental implant, is placed in the empty spot left behind by your missing tooth. Once in place, the area is stitched up so that it can heal. At this point, we may be able to attach an abutment and temporary replacement crown to your fixture, though it is not unusual to wait until after the recovery period before having anything attached to the implant fixture.
The Recovery Period
The second and most important step of the dental implant process is the recovery period. What makes this step so important is the fact that it is when osseointegration occurs. Osseointegration is a biological process that results in your implant fixture being accepted by your body as a natural piece of your jaw structure. This process occurs because dental implants are made from titanium, which is a biocompatible alloy that your body doesn’t recognize as unnatural. This process typically takes 3 to 6 months to complete.
Once your implant fixture has had enough time to heal, you will return to our practice in order to have your restoration attached. What makes the replacement teeth we supply our patients with so great is the fact that we custom make them based on impressions taken of each patient’s remaining natural teeth. By taking this extra step, we are able to provide our patients with beautiful replacement teeth that fit in perfectly among their natural teeth.
